MOVING ON Catholic Central graduate Mickey Bednar, flanked by his parents Mike and Tammy Bednar, will continue his academic and athletic careers at Washington and Jefferson, where he will play football. Also on hand for the signing were, from left, brother Alex Bednar, Catholic Central Athletic Director Steve Daley, Principal Rich Wilinski, head football coach Gregg Bahen and sister Taylor Bednar.
-- Mike Mathison
STEUBENVILLE - Gregg Bahen has been associated with the Catholic Central football program for many years.
He said Crusaders graduate Mickey Bednar was a first for him.
"Since I've been here we've had some great kids go through here, but he's the first four-year letterman during my tenure here," said Bahen.
"He did everything for us. He never came off the field. I think some schools missed the boat on him."
The one school that landed Bednar was Washington and Jefferson College, where Bednar will continue his academic and athletic careers.
"A couple of my friends are going there and it's a great academic school," said Bednar, who will major in either chemistry or business. "I just wanted to play football somewhere and that's where I was most comfortable."
Bednar will also head to the campus with friend and teammate Matt Yanda.
"It helps a lot already knowing people who will be at W&J," said Bednar.
He totaled 1,907 yards and 19 touchdowns on 281 carries his final two years at tailback. He also caught 33 balls for 368 yards and a score and completed four passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns.
Bednar returned two kickoffs for touchdowns as a senior. He kicked extra points, punted, returned kickoffs, played tailback and linebacker or in the secondary.
"He never complained. He was always there," Bahen said. "There were times, not a lot, where we put him behind the center in shotgun and he got the direct snap."
Bednar finished with 11 varsity letters, including four in baseball and three in basketball. He received the Drs. Press and Macedonia Award at Central.
"Most importantly, he always did what we asked," said Bahen. "In his own way, he was a leader. My only regret, and I'm going to live with this, is that we didn't have a better football season (the Crusaders were 2-8.) I'll go to my grave thinking that.
"I've been watching him play for many years. A lot of these seniors played together throughout the years on a lot of football, basketball and baseball teams. It seems like they've been together for 20 years."
He was selected a first-team All-Eastern District and honorable mention all-state football player his junior and senior years, in addition to a first-team all-Ohio Valley Athletic Conference player his last two years. Bednar is a four-year player for Steubenville Post 33 and was a member of the 2007 state championship team.
"I like football more than baseball, but baseball was always up there," said Bednar. "Coaches were calling me every day, wondering what my decision was."
A pair of national college football magazines recently listed Washington and Jefferson in their NCAA Division III Top 25 preseason polls. The Sporting News ranked the Presidents as the preseason No. 13 team, while Lindy's selected W&J as its 21st-ranked squad.
Washington and Jefferson ranks third among NCAA Division III football programs with 666 victories. The Presidents have recorded 26 consecutive winning seasons, the 10th-best streak in Division III history.
"I like how far W&J is from home so I can come back to visit my brother and sister and family and watch Alex and Taylor play sports at Central," said Bednar. "I know making time to study will be difficult. But, I'll be up to the challenge."
During the 11 years since head coach Mike Sirianni has been a member of the W&J football coaching staff, the Presidents have passed for 33,991 yards and 341 touchdowns and has posted a 107-30 record (.781) since his arrival on campus.
Assistant head coach Todd Young was the leader in recruiting Bednar. Young begins his 11th season on the W&J sidelines in the fall as the offensive and recruiting coordinator. In addition, Young he will be the assistant head coach for the eighth-straight year.
"Coach Young has been interested in Mickey since last football season. He was very persistent," said Bahen.
Bednar totaled 2,436 total yards of offense his junior and senior years.
"I want to thank my parents, my coaches and everyone who has pushed me to become better at everything I do," said Bednar.

Beer.....belongs, enjoy it. Beer is America's beverage of moderation.
In the home loving land of ours, in this America of kindliness of friendship and good
humored tolerance--perhaps no beverages are more at home than good American beer and ale. Beer is the kind of beverages Americans like. It belongs
to pleasant living, good fellowship, to sensible moderation and our right to enjoy it! This too, belongs to our American heritage of personal freedom.
